John McEnroe has come under fire

By Mikael McKenzie

John McEnroe has sparked outrage for his comments during Iga Swiatek's clash with Jasmine Paolini in the French Open final. Swiatek thrashed her Italian opponent 6-2, 6-1 to secure the fifth Grand Slam title of her career.

McEnroe was co-commentating on the tie for American broadcaster NBC Sports when it was brought up that Swiatek recently signed a sponsorship deal with makeup brand Lancome.

The retired player then said: "You think if they offer her enough, Lancome, maybe she would consider throwing on a little makeup for the right price?"

Fans on social media are outraged with McEnroe for calling Swiatek out over not wearing any makeup.

One person wrote: "That was sickening. It's time for McEnroe to be GONE as a commentator. See ya."

Another added: "During this dominant performance from Swiatek, there was a moment in the broadcast where McEnroe questioned if she would "throw on a little makeup" before the trophy presentation. Disrespectful and disappointing. Would he say this in a men’s match?"

A third supporter wrote: "@NBC McEnroe’s comment about Swiatek 'do you think if Lancome gives her more, she’ll start wearing (more) makeup' was unacceptable."

It is not the first time Swiatek has faced comments over her lack of makeup. Two years ago at Roland Garros she was asked: "Outside of the court, when you go to a party, do you use make-up?. Do you like to go elegant and smart and so on?

"Because many players we have seen in the past, they were staying hours in front of the mirror before going on court and using the make-up and you seem very natural like this."

But she refused to get involved in such a discussion, replying: "OK. Thank you."

During Sunday's broadcast of the men's final, McEnroe paid tribute to NBC and host Mary Carillo as they will no longer be covering the tournament from 2025. Warner Bros, which owns TNT Sports in the UK, will take over the mantle.

McEnroe started working for NBC in 1992, two years before he retired, and has covered the French Open for them ever since.

"While I have a chance, Mary, for all the years, it's the last set, fifth set, for everything, we've worked together so often," McEnroe said. "Thank you so much. Give me a hug. Love you.

"NBC, thank you so much. You gave me my first job as a broadcaster. I appreciate that. What a way to go out with this match. Great effort by both guys. I don't know who's going to win. Any idea?"
