This recipe for blackberry cobbler is a keeper. It is super easy but results in a fabulous dessert. Blackberries provide the perfect balance of flavor and aren’t overly sweet.

The topping is a golden crust that is soft on the inside and baked to perfection on the outside. You can’t go wrong with this classic cobbler recipe.

What is the difference between blackberry pie and blackberry cobbler?

Blackberry pie has a top and bottom layer. The blackberry fruit filling is layered in a pie crust and the topped with another pie shell.

However, cobbler only has a topping and it is more similar to a biscuit batter texture instead of a pastry found in pies.

The filling is very similar but the topping is different in texture and taste.

Can you use frozen blackberries?

Frozen blackberries can be substituted in this recipe. Allow the frozen berries to thaw and drain them before using in the cobbler.

Don’t skip this step because the excess juice needs to be drained before using.

Substitution and Additions

  • Berries. Try using other types of berries in this cobbler. Some delicious ideas include peach, blueberry, raspberry and strawberry.
  • Combine flavors. Make a mixed berry cobbler by combining different berries for a tasty flavor combination. Blueberries and blackberries taste great together.
  • Lemon juice. Add a splash of lemon juice to the blackberry mixture. It enhances the flavor of the fruit and provides the perfect balance of sweet and tartness. Fresh lemon juice is suggested if you have it.
  • Thicken the mixture. You can add 2 tablespoons of cornstarch to the mixture before baking if the mixture is too runny and you desire it to be thicker.
  • Butter. Margarine can be used in this recipe instead of butter. However, we suggest butter and think the flavor is better.

How to freeze cobbler:

We do not recommend freezing cobbler before it has been baked. The texture will change and the crust won’t rise as normal. If you need to make this in advance, you can prepare the berry mixture and freeze up to 3 months until ready to use.

Cobbler freezes best after it has been baked. Once the cobbler has baked, allow it to cool. Then cover with plastic wrap and foil.

Freeze up to 3 months to ensure the freshest taste. Keep in mind that cobbler once frozen will change in texture a bit. The crust will be slightly soggy after freezing.

When ready to enjoy, thaw the cobbler in the fridge overnight. Then warm in the oven until heated through and enjoy.
